Crazy Rich Asians

It happened last year, I was walking through a used book store. I had $40 dollars worth of store credit so I was just browsing for anything interesting. Through the fiction section, I saw a book with the title "Crazy Rich Asians".

The title grabbed me and I read the back cover. It looked like some generic romance novel where some average Asian girl catches the interest of a billionaire real estate developer in Singapore. And she doesn't know how rich this guy is at first.

I bought the book as a gag just so I could crack jokes with my buddies for a few weeks. Which I did. Any time I could, I stuck the phrase "Crazy Rich Asians" into the conversation.

A few weeks ago, I got a call from my friend and he told me he saw a movie trailer on Youtube. They were making "Crazy Rich Asians" the movie.

I thought it was hilarious. Why would they make this generic romance novel a movie?

Then it hit me.

After watching the movie trailer, this film reminded me of "50 Shades of Gray". The author of that novel wrote 3 novels and all of them got turned into films. I guess those movies were successful so movie makers started jumping on the "Rich guy falls for an average girl and subjects her to bondage" market.

After all, I think I heard that half of the global movie market is China. I would have thought someone in China saw "50 Shades of Gray" and re purpose this film with a Chinese cast.

While I watched the trailer for "Crazy Rich Asians" I did not see anything that referenced whipping, gags, or water torture. However, maybe those are in the film or deleted scenes or in the book.

I've only read through one chapter of "Crazy Rich Asians" but I'm keeping my eye out for any funny stuff.
